ઘરડા માણસો હોય તે જ પોતાની બુદ્ધિથી ગાડાને વાળી શકે છે. એમાં જોરનું કામ નથી, કળનું કામ છે. બુદ્ધિનું કામ છે. એટલે જ કહેવતો પડી છે—ઘરડાં ગાડાં વાળે.

gharaḍā māṇasō hōya tē ja pōtānī buddhithī gāḍānē vāḷī śakē chē. ēmāṁ jōranuṁ kāma nathī, kaḷanuṁ kāma chē. buddhinuṁ kāma chē. ēṭalē ja kahēvatō paḍī chē—gharaḍāṁ gāḍāṁ vāḷē.

ઘરડા થાય પણ ચસકો જાય નહીં.

gharaḍā thāya paṇa casakō jāya nahīṁ.

ઘરડા થાય તેમ અક્કલ જાય

gharaḍā thāya tēma akkala jāya

‘ઘરડા થયો, (શરીર) પણ જીવ (મન) ઘરડો થતો નથી,’

‘gharaḍā thayō, (śarīra) paṇa jīva (mana) gharaḍō thatō nathī,’

ઘરડાં ધાંચમાંથી ગાહું કહાડે.

ઘરડાં જે ગત જાણે તે નાનો ન જાણે

ઘરડાં સાસુ મૂડાં ને નેચામડાંનું તાણું તુટ્યું.

‘ઘરડાં થાય તેમ અક્કલ જાય’

ઘરડાં વગર ધરનું ઢાંકણું નહીં.

gharaḍāṁ vagara dharanuṁ ḍhāṁkaṇuṁ nahīṁ.

ઘરડાં વગર ઘર નહીં, ને વહું વગર વર નહીં.

gharaḍāṁ vagara ghara nahīṁ, nē vahuṁ vagara vara nahīṁ.

ઘરડાં વગર ઘર, ને હાકેમ વડે નગર.

gharaḍāṁ vagara ghara, nē hākēma vaḍē nagara.

ઘરડાં વગર ઘરનું ઠાંકણું નહીં. વૃદ્ધ એ ઘરનું છત્ર છે

gharaḍāṁ vagara gharanuṁ ṭhāṁkaṇuṁ nahīṁ. vr̥ddha ē gharanuṁ chatra chē

ઘરડાં વગરનું ઘર શોભે નહિ

gharaḍāṁ vagaranuṁ ghara śōbhē nahi

ઘરડાંની અક્કલે ચાલે તે કદી ન ભૂલે

ઘરડાંનું જ ઘર.

'ઘરડે ઘડપણ લાડવા ભાવે.'

ઘરડે ઘડપણની જે ખીજી કહેવત છે તે પણ જોવા-જાણવા જેવી છે.

ઘરડી ગાય ગૌરને આપે.

ઘરડો જોગીને (જોશી) વૈદ રોગી આ શું કામના ?

ઘરમાં ટકાના ત્રણ શેર બહાર તિસમાર ખાં

‘ઘરમાં વૃદ્ધ તો જોઈએ જ, એ વગરનું ઘર ન કહી શકાય.’

‘gharamāṁ vr̥ddha tō jōīē ja, ē vagaranuṁ ghara na kahī śakāya.’

ઘરની સ્ત્રી કહે લાવની મુઆ વગર અન્નથી પેટમાં કૂવા

gharanī strī kahē lāvanī muā vagara annathī pēṭamāṁ kūvā

‘ઘરનું ભોજન ઝેર બરાબર’ કહેવાયું છે

‘gharanuṁ bhōjana jhēra barābara’ kahēvāyuṁ chē

ઘરેણું ગાંઠું લાવો અને શૂળી પર ચઢી જાઓ

gharēṇuṁ gāṁṭhuṁ lāvō anē śūḷī para caḍhī jāō

‘ ઘઉં સારા હોય તો સસલાના કાન જેવી પાતળી રોટલી પણ હું કરી જાણું છું....’

‘ ghauṁ sārā hōya tō sasalānā kāna jēvī pātaḷī rōṭalī paṇa huṁ karī jāṇuṁ chuṁ....’

ઘઉંમાંથી લાપસી થાય-કંસાર થાય લાડવા થાય-બધું એકનું એક જ....

ghauṁmāṁthī lāpasī thāya-kaṁsāra thāya lāḍavā thāya-badhuṁ ēkanuṁ ēka ja....

ઘેર ઘેર ચાવટ જાય, પોતાની બીજા કરે;

ghēra ghēra cāvaṭa jāya, pōtānī bījā karē;

ઘેરે કળાં થાય, કલિયુગના વારા વિષે;

ghērē kaḷāṁ thāya, kaliyuganā vārā viṣē;

ઘેટા ધસ બહુ ભુંડી.

ghēṭā dhasa bahu bhuṁḍī.

' ઘી ચોરીએ-ઘી ચોરીએ સ્વાહા ! '

' ghī cōrīē-ghī cōrīē svāhā ! '

ઘોબાના બહુ ઠાઠ, ગોઠણ ગાંડા બાંધી બેસતા;

ghōbānā bahu ṭhāṭha, gōṭhaṇa gāṁḍā bāṁdhī bēsatā;

ઘોડા દોડીને થાકે, ને સવારની હોંસ પુરી નહી થાય. ઘોડા વેચી પસ્તાવું તે નકામું.

ghōḍā dōḍīnē thākē, nē savāranī hōṁsa purī nahī thāya. ghōḍā vēcī pastāvuṁ tē nakāmuṁ.

ઘોડા ગાડી, ખારા પાણી અને વિધવા વ્યભિચારિણી સ્ત્રીઓની જાળથી જે માણસ બચ્યે રહે તો કલકત્તામાં આનંદથી રહી શકાય છે. કલકત્તાના પાણી ખરાબ છે તે
