śēṣajīvhā lēkhaṇa karuṁ

શેઠને કહેજો ‘મંગલદાસ હજી મુબઈમાં જ છે. નાસી ગયા નથી.’ વગેરે કહેવતો આપણામાં છે જ. આ બધી વાત ‘કાકા મટીને ભત્રીજા થયા જેવી છે.’

śēṭhanē kahējō ‘maṁgaladāsa hajī mubaīmāṁ ja chē. nāsī gayā nathī.’ vagērē kahēvatō āpaṇāmāṁ chē ja. ā badhī vāta ‘kākā maṭīnē bhatrījā thayā jēvī chē.’

શેઠની પૂંઠે ફેલ્લી થઈ ને પંપાણીને મોટી કરી.

śēṭhanī pūṁṭhē phēllī thaī nē paṁpāṇīnē mōṭī karī.

શિખામણ દઈએ મુરખને, લે નહીં ધ્યાનજ માંહે;

śikhāmaṇa daīē murakhanē, lē nahīṁ dhyānaja māṁhē;

શિખામણ દીજે સ માણસને, નહીં દીજે એક ગમાર;

śikhāmaṇa dījē sa māṇasanē, nahīṁ dījē ēka gamāra;

શિખામણ દીજે સમાણસને, નહીં દીજે એક ગમાર;

શિવરામ ભાઉં ગાડી' અંગેની કહેવત.

શ્રમ વગર ભાગ્ય ન ફળે

śrama vagara bhāgya na phaḷē

શ્રાવણ જાય કારડા, તો કણે ભરાય ઓરડા.

śrāvaṇa jāya kāraḍā, tō kaṇē bharāya ōraḍā.

શ્રાવણ પાંચે પાછલે, મેઘ ન માંડે આળ;

śrāvaṇa pāṁcē pāchalē, mēgha na māṁḍē āḷa;

શ્રાવણ સુદી સમમી, સ્વાતિ ઊગે સૂર;

śrāvaṇa sudī samamī, svāti ūgē sūra;

શ્રવણ સુખારે હોત હય, સુને સંદેશન બૈન;

śravaṇa sukhārē hōta haya, sunē saṁdēśana baina;

શ્રાવણમાં સરડાં પડ્યાં, ને ભાદરવાની હેલી;

śrāvaṇamāṁ saraḍāṁ paḍyāṁ, nē bhādaravānī hēlī;

શ્રાવણમાં સરડાં પરડાં, ને ભાદરવાની હેલી;

શ્રેષ્ઠતીર્થ ધરવાળી

શુકન એ વેહેમ હોય કે ખરું હોય, તે ચર્ચા આ સ્થળે ઘટતી નથી. પણ બધા દેશમાં ને સુધરેલા લોકોમાં થોડેઘણે અંશે એ વેહેમ છે. તેમ ગુજરાતમાં છે તે સંબંધે લોકોમાં જે વધારે પ્રચલિત છે તેવાં થોડાં ઓછાં લખ્યાં છે.

શૂર ચડાવવા સારૂ સ્ત્રીઓ પોતાના પતિને કહે છે.

śūra caḍāvavā sārū strīō pōtānā patinē kahē chē.

શૂરવીર નિર્ધન જગત, યશ લેઈ સુરપુર જાય;

śūravīra nirdhana jagata, yaśa lēī surapura jāya;

શ્વેત હંસ બક શ્વેત હૈ, કયસે પરણ લખાય; પય પાની આગે ધરે, સકલ ભેદ ખુલ જાય.

śvēta haṁsa baka śvēta hai, kayasē paraṇa lakhāya; paya pānī āgē dharē, sakala bhēda khula jāya.

શ્વેત હંસ બક શ્વેત હૈં, કયસેં પરખ લપાય;
