sumathī dātāra bhalā, bēsavānī kahē hā; dātārathī suma bhalā, cōkhkhī pāḍē nā.

Literally: A giver is better than a miser, as he says yes to sitting down; but a miser is better than a giver if he gives a clear refusal.
What it means: A straightforward refusal from a miser is far better than false promises of generosity from a giver who keeps you waiting in vain.
